Somerset Entertainment’s Avalon Spa Series
Opportunity
Over the course of a decade and a half, Somerset Entertainment has established itself as an international leader in creating and distributing specialty music and multimedia products for sales environments not typically associated with music—Bed, Bath & Beyond, Costco, as well as drug and gift stores. Preparing to launch its first titles in a new product line based on the ideas of relaxation, well-being, and restoration, Somerset wanted to take its theme beyond text and musical content, and create a series that had the same qualities of exclusivity and pampering as a visit to a spa. The package had to be an experience in itself, one that was tactile, luxurious, seductive. Somerset turned to the packaging therapists at Tri-Plex for a consultation and treatment.
Solution
Tri-Plex’s hardcover T-Book package format proved the perfect medium to deliver all the ingredients of Somerset’s healing blend. The full-color text pages are on a smooth but uncoated stock, allowing users to make their stress-free journal entries—of their dreams and meditations—in the company of Somerset’s sumptuous imagery, massage instructions, techniques for quieting the mind, and recipes (with facial steams and bath oils) for a spa at home. The text is sewn-bound (not stapled) to stand up to repeated use, and the CD comes on a clear tray inside the front cover. The eminent customizability of the T-Book is reflected in the covers, which are quilted and wrapped in a raw-silk-style fabric for a distinctive sensory impression at retail and at home.
Result
Already a bestseller for Somerset at Bed, Bath & Beyond in its first few weeks on the racks, the Avalon Spa series has also just won a Gold Award from the New Jersey Packaging Executives Club, a statewide organization composed of members from the pharma, cosmetic, and health and beauty industries, in their Package of the Year competition.
