Gaiam Tin Lunch Box Packaging
Opportunity
For the back-to-school season, Gaiam had come up with a product that would attract parent and child alike: four themed collections of children's programming and movies on DVD (including the beloved Benji films), each set of three discs packaged in an eye-catching tin lunchbox. The DVDs and the lunchboxes would have kid-appeal, but low price point and a lunchbox in the purchase would sell the real customers—Mom and Dad. With Fall fast approaching, Gaiam needed a vendor who could supply quick and responsible sourcing of all the different components in the packages, as well as the convenience of one-stop shopping for everything from production to fulfillment and pack-out, and all at a cost that would support their business model. They called Tri-Plex.
Solution
With a tin component in the mix, all the handwork involved in collating and assembling, and the need to combine economical purchasing with high quality and attention to detail, Chinese production was the way to go. Tri-Plex's Shanghai office could do the manufacturing and assembling, in compliance with the criteria for children's product safety and responsible sourcing so important to Gaiam. Our prototyping and preproduction sampling took the guesswork out of the tin design process for our customer, and our experienced and creative staff came up with an interior-filler and a way to seal the package for retail but still allow access to the handle for display and racking.
Result
With our New York and China personnel working in sync around-the-clock, we delivered proofs, samples, and final product on schedule and in time for the back-to-school shopping season. Strong initial orders let Gaiam know they had come up with a winner, and our on-schedule delivery of a kid-friendly and budget-approved product was the basis for a successful launch at retail.
