The Spiderwick Chronicles – Collector Editions
Opportunity
The Spiderwick Chronicles has been a tremendously successful and popular childrens’ book series and franchise. The hardcover book designs are beautiful; featuring rounded spines with a textured title treatment and spot coating. The five-book set is offered as both a premium collection and a special Collector's Edition, which was not yet created; with the major motion picture to appear in early 2008.
The package presentation was the key to differentiating not only the collections, but also the task of designing them: one for domestic, the other for offshore production.
Solution
The premium edition called for an upscale but very cost-effective solution. Using a fully reinforced folding carton construction, and our print capacity to apply matte-and-spot gloss coating in-line, we produced a sturdy spine and sidewall feel with abundant lush color on the exterior and interior of the slipcase – all done economically, in a single pass through the press.
The special "Collector's Trunk" was a work of art, with its unique domed top. The top was made with individual strips of board sealed between two layers of paper– allowing it to follow the curvature of the side panels like a real treasure chest. It was supple to the touch from the matte film lamination, and closed with a distinctive “click” from the hidden magnets. No detail was spared– from the fully lined and printed interior to the delicately finished side panels; even the curved edges were covered.
Result
A luxurious and enchanting special keepsake edition with a premium version that keeps selling. Using our high-volume shrink-wrap lines and contract packaging services we were able to collate and assemble all the books and collateral for both kits, anticipating the demand when the film premieres.
